Sussex Golf Captains

Sussex v Lady Captains

The most competitive match of the year, no one wants to lose. This year was the 50th anniversary of this fixture. Apparently, the men had won 23, the ladies 16 and 10 were drawn. The ladies were on a bit of a run, having won the last two.

This year, due to fixture issues, we moved the match to East Brighton. They laid on wall-to-wall sunshine and a gentle breeze, all was right with the world. As is traditional, the captains and their representatives met to discuss the allocation of shots. There was much skulduggery and shenanigans in trying to gain an advantage. Eventually, Kay used her womanly wiles to get two extra shots for the ladies. Sadly, it turns out Richard was all out of manly ones.

Nevertheless, fortified by several lorry loads of chips, we took to the course to engage in battle with our most fearsome opponents. But, who would win out?

Match 1

Richard Jays (Captain) and Darren Derkson (Captain) v Kay Grindell (Captain) and Liisa McDougall (Captain)

The Gentlemen of Sussex were schooled by the soft hands of Liisa (Oooh! I say. Ed), her gentle touch coupled with a firm stroke led to greenside glory. Just when we’d thought things had come to a head, Kay got out her magic wand and blew us away. The company was fabulous. Lost 2&1

Match 2

Harold ‘Two Puds’ Knight (82) and Andy Plowright v Jane Court and Carol Hall

We managed a win even though, when 'Two-Puds' hit Andy’s ball, he said, “Is it still in the same county?”. It was a very enjoyable afternoon. (Nothing hand-related happened? Ed) With great company. Won 5 &3

Match 3

Keith Talbot and Joe Angella v Brenda Gilbert and Liz Street

The high point of Joe and Keith’s round was winning the first hole, closely followed by halving the fourth in birdies. Mostly, we watched on in admiration as Brenda and Liz played tremendous, steady golf, gradually wearing us down. We were three down with four to play. A brief revival saw us win the next two, but order was restored as the ladies completed their victory on the seventeenth. The other low point was being told off for talking too much! There’s no pleasing some people. Lost 2&1

Match 4

Peter Barford and Peter Brookshaw v Heidi Dronfield and Linda Brand

This was an excellent match, with Hiedi and Linda not having the run of the greens, it was played with the typical good humour. Won 3&2

Match 5

Peter Billcliff (87) and Des Malcolm (61) v Lesley Talbot and Joanna Greenstreet

The ladies chipped like a pro (Joanna), putted like a pro (Lesley) (So, you were playing with a couple of pros? Ed) and read the greens like a caddy (Lesley) whilst we drove for show (Des) as straight as a die (Peter). Lost 2 Down

Match 6

Malcolm Holmes and Ken Penfold v Ann Prior and Rosemary Barford

This was an enjoyable afternoon, well spent with two special ladies (I say, steady on, old chap. Ed). All went very well until the 13th hole, when the match was all square. However, we proceeded to lose the next four holes. Brilliant golf, ladies! Lost 4 &2.

Match 7

Tim Ingram and Ivan Parnell v Pat John’s and Wendy Melville

An excellent hard-fought match (Nice to see someone was concentrating on the game, Ed). We were three down at the turn but fought back bravely to stand all square on the eighteenth. Despite considerable effort from both teams, the match remained a half. All Square

Match 8

John Macauley and Ian Potter v Clare Parkinson and Terry Trussen

A very pleasant match where the scoring was much closer than the result suggests. Won 7&6 (how much is that doggie…)

Match 9

Peter Hawley and Ian Richmond v Jill Nickalls and Wendy Shergold

The ladies played wonderful golf, it was a pleasure to watch….really, it was… Lost 6&4

Match 10

Colin Prior and Mike Grindell v Caroline Angella and Laura Bennett

Great round of golf. Nip and tuck all the way until the last hole when some idiot played the wrong ball (It was Colin, wasn’t it? Ed). Well, the ladies deserved it. Lost 1 Down

Match 11

Kevin Heanen and Pete Rodger v Jane White and Nanette Meeten

It was a pleasant round with two lovely ladies who both hit the ball well. Unfortunately, they had to play Pete, who hit the ball like a God. Won 3&2

Result 4 ½ to 6 ½

There you have it, another win for the ladies. That is three on the bounce. Richard’s season needs a good win to get back on track.

It was a lot of fun, and everyone enjoyed themselves.
