Taking their lead from Giff-Gaff Potter, 20 worried souls had spent the previous few days glued to their phones as the scoured the weather forecast for any hope that a biblical deluge could be avoided. Reassured by the locals that Oxford had its own micro-climate and the forecast said it would be playable the team set off. The stout yeomen of Sussex were loaded up with waterproofs, wellies and a small canoe and the windscreen wipers were set to frantic as they headed north.
But, dear reader, what would be the outcome?
Match 1
Richard Jays (Captain) and Dave Balfour v Roger Davis (Captain) and Paul Bradbury
David, as a guest for the day, summed his feelings up thusly: bad weather, terrible golf, before adding, ‘If only I could have this day back!’ Jaysie said ‘It wasn’t close, but at least Dave made a match out of it, I was useless. Lol’. Lost by an unspecified margin.
Match 2
Kevin Heanen and Willie Dunn v Malcolm Nutt and Mike Abbots
Fabulous match, the course was in very good condition. We took on a friendly couple of birdies on both holes. It was great fun, we would love to return to Oxford GC. Lost by an unspecified margin (No Dave? Ed).
Match 3
Andy Plowright and Nigel Wates v Simon Berry and Stuart Temple
Stunning course and awful weather. The match was All Square after 9. As the group in front had packed up, I went in. Nigel stayed out on his own (Was that a reflection on the company? I note you make no reference to it! Ed). Half.
Match 4
Keith Hayward (Charlton Athletic Goalie) and Phil Boole (Jaysies Driver) v David Haddock and David Ryan
In case no one has mentioned it, there was a drop of rain. We finished at the ninth. Oxford putted us off the course, we tried our best but we were never close to beating them. Lost 2 Down.
Match 5
Des Malcolm and Mitch Clark v Keith Henly on Thames and Kevin Stirrup Pump (Handy. Ed)
Always a tough game, playing with Des against two home club members. We were told to come in after 14, which screwed up our 18-hole strategy (Had them just where you wanted them? Ed) Lost 1 Down
Match 6
Peter Brookshaw and Nigel Powell v Fiz Kassam and Richard Greene
Despite the wet and windy weather, we thoroughly enjoyed our day. It was a very close match, albeit played between heavy showers. The company was great and despite only playing nine holes, we ended up with a half.
Match 7
Ian Richmond and Fahim Uddin v Kevin Hardy and Philip Stanway
Great match, superb course and competitive and friendly partners (Where you in the right county? Ed). The golf gave a good right-left combo, but the weather won on a technical knockout. We won (Unlike most of the team. Ed) 2Up.
Match 8
John Taylor and John Harker v Mike Pennick and Stuart Dobbs
Great fun, but we got a bit wet, before prudence won out and we shook hands on an honourable draw. Half
Match 9
Malcolm Holmes and Trevor Haeger v Henry Willis and Terry Killick
Lovely course, good company, bad weather. What more is there to say? (I can think of a few things! Ed). Lost by an unspecified amount.
Match 10
Brian Hooker and Dave Boys v Richard Busby and Bill White
Very enjoyable water sports with a great partner, and our opponents gladly joined in. David kept us in the game. Chris and Terry gave it their all but we were winning when they threw in the towels. Won 3&1.
So, there you have it, Oxford won handsomely. Turns out the squib wasn’t so much damp as absolutely soaked.
As with all these things, the golf is only half the day. Once again, when faced with an open bar, Sussex Golf Captains are up to any challenge.
